We Prayed...

Pastor's Prayer for National Day of Prayer

Almighty God our Father, many of our sons and daughters in uniform, pride of our nation, are engaging a vicious and unprincipled enemy in Iraq and Afghanistan. Many of them are Christians but all of them in those troubled regions are standing in harm's way. While this is true they are not out of your sight or out of your protecting and merciful care.

You, O God, whose eye is on the sparrow, will answer our prayers for them according to your superintending Providence and great mercy. It is you O God who has first claim on all our lives. But we also remember today, O God, that our troops do not fight for pillage or conquest but to restore peace and stability.

So we ask today that your watchful eye be on them all and that a just and lasting peace will soon come to these tortured and troubled regions. We know this is a bold petition on our part but we ask in faith knowing that you, our God, are the God of Peace and the One whose sustaining hand is never far from us. Send us peace, O God, send us healing, send us your Spirit as we join millions of others today in humbly laying this petition before your feet.

The National Day of Prayer was May 1, 2008.

Verse of the Month
John 17:21:

that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.

Sermon
The Alien from Zone 51
Those who have battled mental illness are too painfully aware of the stereotypes about mental illness, which virtually preclude social success for an individual bearing the burden. Stigma is painful and demeaning. Is there something Christians can do to help diminish this social travesty? Let’s analyze this “alien from Zone 51” in an effort to go below the surface in an effort to attain true Christian empathy.

Commentary
The First-Century Stress Fighter

Who was better than the apostle Paul at turning his trials into forceful literature? He scratches out a surging rhythm with his quill even as he sings the blues. We can’t help but react: “This man has been there! This man knows something about stress!” That same apostle Paul who went at life like gangbusters also showed us the way through the Valley of Stress.
